The Difference Between Recirculating Shrink Tunnels and Jet Air Shrink Tunnels

Recirculating Shrink Tunnel

A recirculating shrink tunnel heats the air inside the chamber and circulates it continuously around the product using a fan system. The heated air moves through the chamber in a controlled circulation pattern — flowing over and around the product, transferring heat to the film, and then being drawn back through the heating element to be reheated and recirculated. The air velocity inside a recirculating tunnel is relatively low — the heat transfer from air to film happens primarily through sustained contact with warm air rather than high-velocity impingement.
The air flows gently around the product at low velocity, warming the film surface gradually and evenly as the product travels through the chamber.

Jet Air Shrink Tunnel

A jet air shrink tunnel delivers heated air to the product through a series of nozzles at high velocity. The high-velocity hot air jets impinge directly on the film surface, transferring heat rapidly and intensely to the film at the specific points where the air jets make contact. The air jets are typically arranged in a pattern that covers the full product surface — ensuring complete coverage from all angles as the product moves through the chamber.The air flows gently around the product at low velocity, warming the film surface gradually and evenly as the product travels through the chamber.

Summary

Choose a recirculating shrink tunnel if your products are lightweight, your packaging carries high-quality print that must be preserved, or your priority is a smooth even finish at a lower cost and energy consumption.

Choose a jet air shrink tunnel if your products are heavy or rigid, your film is thick gauge, you need a very tight close-contour wrap, or your production speed requires a higher belt speed than a recirculating tunnel can support at the required shrink quality.
